Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works are credited with the first Pontiac car ever made in 1907. It was displayed at an exhibition in New York City’s Grand Central Palace. Well received by the press, its slogan aptly described the Pontiac –“The car that’s built to get there”. In 1908 the company merged with the Oakland Motor company with operations in Pontiac, Michigan. In January 1909 General Motors bought the stakes and was the beginning of the Pontiac under the General Motors Company.
Smaller but similar to the a/c condenser is the Pontiac a/c evaporator. It is a coil pack located behind the center console of the dash. The a/c refrigerant enters the a/c evaporator. When the heater fan blows hot air over the a/c evaporator it causes the liquid a/c refrigerant to boil and evaporate. The a/c evaporator absorbs heat from the warm air in the car. The air which then passes through the a/c evaporator is now cool air.
The a/c evaporator removes moisture from the air as well, turns it into water and drains it out the bottom of the car. The temperature of the a/c evaporator ranges between 34 degrees to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature falls below 32 degree Fahrenheit the moisture will freeze on the coils. To prevent this there is a thermostat switch to connect and disconnect to the compressor as required.
Pontiac Bonneville SLE a/c evaporators for vehicles made up to 1999 cost around 150$. Pontiac Bonneville SLE a/c evaporators for vehicles made between 01/2000 to 12/2000 costs around 215$. For Pontiac Grand AM a/c evaporators the cost comes to around 155$.
Located in the engine compartment and driven by the alternator belt / serpentine belt is the alternator. The alternator creates voltage in AC current. Most models have inbuilt regulators. The alternator can be considered to be the ‘lifeline’ of the car’s electrical system.
A Pontiac Vibe GT alternator is priced at approximately 215$. A Pontiac Aztek alternator is priced in a higher range of 416$.
While applying brakes if you feel a pulsation in the brake pedal or steering wheel you need to replace the brake rotors. The Pontiac disc brake rotor is made of iron. It has a machined surface where the brake pads contact the brake disc. This causes your car to stop when you apply pressure to the brake pedal. Replace brake rotors in pairs otherwise different thicknesses of rotors will release heat at a different rate.
A used replacement Pontiac Aztek brake disc is available for 52$. This is for rear AWD only. This is for models made from 01/2001 to 12/2005. A Pontiac Vibe brake disc-rear can be had for about 35$ for vehicles made from 01/2002 onwards. A Pontiac Grand Am brake disc-front is available for 60$.
Located on either side of the radiator is the cooling fan, at times also called the radiator fan. It is operated by an electric motor. It is useful when your car begins to overheat in traffic. The thermostatically controlled switch turns on the radiator fan when the coolant reaches a predetermined temperature.
A Pontiac Grand Prix fan motor comes for about 115$. Pontiac Trans Sport and Pontiac Firebird Fire hawk fan motors are available for about 55$.
